Info It had been less than a year since man first walked on the Moon, but as far as the American public was concerned, Apollo 13 was just another "routine" space flight--until these words pierced the immense void of space: "Houston, we have a problem." Stranded 205,000 miles from Earth in a crippled spacecraft, astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert fight a desperate battle to survive. Meanwhile, at Mission Control, astronaut Ken Mattingly, flight director Gene Kranz and a heroic ground crew race against time--and the odds--to bring them home

This must have been one of the scariest yet thrilling experience ever. Funny how people think of man on the moon as a hoax perpetratied by the US. how then do all the transmitting stations around the world, acting independently but together, carry on such a hoax? was never a hoax. Apollo 13 Watch stream new albums. The story of American race to the Moon is incomparable. At first it was a try to catch up with the Soviets, after that pass them. JFK knew well what he did. He wanted to settle that the democracy is superior to communism. He proved it also in outer space. One of Nasa achievements was saving lives of the crew of Apollo 13. And this is the story. Due to incompetence and neglect the crew of Apollo 1 died during a routine count down. Due to the human intelligence and good fortune Jim Lovell and his crew returned safely home. The movie is excellent. There are technical flaws of course but most of them are covered by live Lovell's commentary. And the story is about how every human being, sometimes against all odds, can survive activating the human will of survival and powers of our mind. The visual effects are of minor importance here. It's the actors, their faces, tone of their voices, their moves tell us the story. They did well. After I read Lovell's 'Lost Moon' and Kranz's 'Failure is Not an Option' which quote was spitefully used on the NYT after the tragedy of Columbia/ I liked the movie even more. Dust in the wind we are. Such achievements like the conquest of the cosmos give our lives a bit of meaning, due to possible harvesting the assets by our children. Apollo 13 is a kind of record of such heroic efforts. Worth watching and thinking about.

I know how this mission turns out. I'm still shaking, have goosebumps. praying for them. Wow, I wasn't even born, but this had to be agonizing for the families.

Image: disney/pixar The first reactions to Onward are out, and while most agree that Pixar's latest film is good fun, not everyone is enchanted. Set in a magical world populated by fantasy creatures, Onward follows two elf brothers voiced by Marvel co-stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. After an attempt to resurrect their dead father for a day only summons his legs, the pair go on a quest to bring back his top half before time runs out. The story has all the makings of the kind of heartstring-tugging fare Pixar has gained a reputation for, alongside some wacky, magical hijinks. Many who attended early screenings found Onward sweet and entertaining, with emotional moments that hit particularly hard for people who have lost a parent. However, some found the plot fairly thin, particularly in comparison to the astronomical standards audiences tend to have for Pixar movies. It sounds like a good, enjoyable film, but probably not a standout. Onward is weird and ✨wonderful✨ Consistently surprising, appropriately sweet, occasionally profound, perfectly Pixar. My only complaints: (1) we don’t get enough of the trash unicorns (2) it made me want to call my dad’s legs?? #OnwardPixar #Onward — Alison Foreman (@alfaforeman) February 19, 2020 #PixarOnward is essentially Pixar’s ABOUT TIME. Yes, it’ll make you ugly cry (especially hard-hitting for those who’ve lost someone dear). It’s a heartrending love letter to the magic of rediscovery & latent powers our legacies hold. A percolating, magical potion of humor & heart — Courtney Howard (@Lulamaybelle) February 19, 2020 I loved #Onward. It’s going to be something so many people can find something to take away from it. If you’ve been through the loss of a parent, though, be ready for a very emotional experience. — Chris E. Hayner (@ChrisHayner) February 19, 2020. @Pixar ’s #Onward is a coming of age story reminds us about the importance of the bonds we share w/our loved ones. @MrDanScanlon ’s personal story adds humanistic and emotional depth to a fantastical world, while Tom Holland and Chris Pratt’s chemistry delivers humor and heart. — Michael Lee (@IamMichaelJLee) February 19, 2020 #Onward leads us on a quest to discover the power of brotherhood & the joy in the magical. Barley & Ian's chemistry wins over our hearts. A welcome departure from Pixar's usual fare, it is more emotional than I anticipated & the enchanting trick up Pixar's sleeve we didn't expect — Ashley Menzel (@AshleyGMenzel) February 19, 2020 Onward is a Pixar film that feels completely unlike any other Pixar film before it. An emotional yet comedic tale that focuses on loss, magic and brotherhood. The story is expertly crafted and will surely pull on the heartstrings of anyone who has ever lost a parent or loved one. — Scott Menzel (@TheOtherScottM) February 19, 2020 #Onward ’s not my favorite Pixar movie, nor is it the studio’s best, but it is a story that will resonate with many. Definitely some laughs and a good time all around. If you’re a fan of RPGs, this one’s for you. — Kirsten (@KirstenAcuna) February 19, 2020 If you’re sensing Onward isn’t quite up to the Pixar standard, you’re right. It’s beautiful & packs a huge emotional wallop but for the most part is a standard road trip adventure story that gets boosted by an excellent ending. It’s good, not great & that’s a letdown for Pixar. — Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) February 19, 2020 #Onward is in the same vein as ZOOTOPIA so your enjoyment will vary based on that. The voice cast is good but the emotional manipulation often feels forced to contain a thin plot. — Kristen Lopez (@Journeys_Film) February 19, 2020 I can't say that I'm a big fan of #Onward. The characters are fun, and the message is strong, but it also has a number of ideas that don't feel fully fleshed out, and it's surprisingly basic as far as story. It has some cute and emotional moments, but didn't work for me overall. — Eric Eisenberg (@eeisenberg) February 19, 2020 Onward arrives in U. S. cinemas on Mar. 6.

Picture this: A film adaptation of a musical that has an extremely divisive fanbase, either you love it or you hate it. The trailers gave off that terrifying vibe with CGI in place of costumes and makeup. I'm the kind of guy who will go out of his way to watch anything. And I mean ANYTHING. A lot of notoriously awful movie musicals fill my guilty pleasure void, from The Wiz, From Justin to Kelly and Spice World to The Pirate Movie, Grease 2 and Popeye. Cats is one more scratch in that bedpost.
One night every year, a tribe of cats called the Jellicles celebrate the Jellicle Ball, with their leader Old Deuteronomy (Dame Judi Dench) choosing one of them to ascend to the Heaviside Layer for a new life. What exactly happens once one moves on is left unclear, whether said cat dies on the way up above in a hot air balloon, but hey, it's a fantasy, roll with it. On this particular night of this particular unspecified timeline, a new arrival is abandoned by a human. This is Victoria (Royal Ballet principal Francesca Hayward in her feature film debut) a shy white kitten, quickly thrust into the world of the Jellicles.
She is introduced to each prominent member of the Jellicles by Munkustrap (Robbie Fairchild) a sort of narrator in the vein of the Bandleader from Chicago) from Gumbie cat Jennyanydots (Rebel Wilson) whose laziness is a front for her attempts to teach the creatures in her home how to work, and Rum Tum Tugger (Jason Derulo) a picky, self-centered rebel, to Bustopher Jones (James Corden) a remarkably fat "cat about town" the troublemaking catburglar duo of Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer (Danny Collins and Naoimh Morgan) and the outcast Grizabella (Jennifer Hudson) banished by the Jellicles for getting involved with the villainous Macavity (Idris Elba) a master criminal with supernatural abilities. Bombalurina (Taylor Swift) in this iteration, instead of being a Jellicle herself, is Macavity's henchwoman. Swift's performance with Macavity's song is the biggest praise most critics have given the film.
The visual effects are downright horrifying (I'm not entirely sure which version I've seen because I can't seem to find Dench's human hand) Jennyanydots removes her fur for a suit that's easier to dance in and she consumes cockroaches with human faces for no discernible reason. But I am a fellow who loves the uncanny valley, as well as the terrified noises of innocent audience members. Hell, my third trip resulted in my two friends leaving around the time of the obviously award-bait original song "Beautiful Ghosts" and then the theater erupted into a full-blown MST3K session.
In no way whatsoever is Cats a good movie nor will it be any kind of award contender (except maybe the Razzies because they seem to carelessly give the award to whatever's the most hated) but, beyond the initial terror you may get within the first twenty minutes, you can have a lot of fun riffing it. Surely there will be others in your theater who have the same idea.

Fright Night Theatrical release poster Directed by Tom Holland Produced by Herb Jaffe Written by Tom Holland Starring Chris Sarandon William Ragsdale Amanda Bearse Stephen Geoffreys Roddy McDowall Music by Brad Fiedel Cinematography Jan Kiesser Edited by Kent Beyda Production company Vistar Films Distributed by Columbia Pictures Release date August 2, 1985 Running time 106 minutes [1] Country United States Language English Budget $7 [2] –$9. 25 million [3] Box office $24. 9 million Fright Night is a 1985 American horror film written and directed by Tom Holland (in his directorial debut) and produced by Herb Jaffe. It stars William Ragsdale, Chris Sarandon, Roddy McDowall, Amanda Bearse, Jonathan Stark, Dorothy Fielding, Stephen Geoffreys, and Art Evans. The film follows young Charley Brewster, who discovers that his next-door neighbor Jerry Dandrige is a vampire. When no one believes him, Charley decides to get Peter Vincent, a TV show host who acted in films as a vampire hunter, to stop Jerry's killing spree. The film was released on August 2, 1985 and grossed $24. 9 million at the box office. Since its release, it has received positive reviews from critics and has become a cult classic. Fright Night, as a franchise, has grown to include a sequel, Fright Night Part 2, in 1988, and a remake in 2011, which was in turn followed by Fright Night 2: New Blood in 2013. In 1989, a Bollywood remake was produced in Hindi entitled Wohi Bhayakar Raat (वही भंयकर रात), starring Kiran Kumar as the vampire. [4] Plot [ edit] 17-year-old Charley Brewster is a fan of both traditional horror films and a horror TV series entitled Fright Night, hosted by former movie vampire hunter Peter Vincent. One evening, Charley discovers that his new next door neighbor Jerry Dandrige, is a vampire responsible for the disappearances of several victims. Charley tells his mother and asks his friends for help. In desperation, he contacts the authorities. Detective Lennox goes with Charley to Jerry's house to question him, but his "roommate" Billy Cole tells them that Jerry is "away on business". Charley reveals his suspicions, and the detective leaves furiously. That night, Charley is surprised to see Jerry in his house after his mother invites him in (after Charley's friend "Evil Ed" Thompson tells him that a vampire can't enter someone's home without an invitation). Later on, Charley gets a visit from Jerry, who offers Charley a choice: forget about his vampire identity - or else. Charlie refuses, brandishing his crucifix at Jerry. When Jerry stops Charley and slowly tries to push him out the window to his death, Charley stabs Jerry's hand with a pencil. Enraged, Jerry destroys Charley's car in retaliation and informs Charley that he will do much worse to him tomorrow night. Charley turns to Peter Vincent for help, but Peter dismisses Charley as an obsessed fan. Charley's girlfriend, Amy Peterson, fearing for Charley's sanity and safety, hires the destitute Vincent to "prove" that Jerry is not a vampire by having him drink what they claim is " holy water ", but it is only tap water; Jerry has claimed to Peter that drinking actual holy water would be against his religious convictions. Vincent discovers Jerry's true nature after glancing at his pocket mirror and noticing Jerry's lack of a reflection, causing him to accidentally drop and smash the mirror. Vincent then flees, but Jerry learns of his discovery after finding a shard of glass on the floor. Jerry hunts down Ed and turns him into a vampire. Ed then visits Vincent and, revealing himself, tries to attack him, only to be warded off when burned by a crucifix. Meanwhile, Jerry chases Charley and Amy into a nightclub. While Charley is trying to call the police for help, Jerry hypnotizes and abducts Amy, who bears a resemblance to Jerry's lost love, and bites her after an intimate moment. With nowhere left to turn, Charley attempts to gain Vincent's help once more. A frightened Vincent initially refuses, but he then reluctantly resumes his "Vampire Killer" role as Charley approaches his neighbor's house. The two are able to repel Jerry's attack using a crucifix, though only Charley's works since he has faith in its spiritual power. Billy appears and knocks Charley unconscious over the banister, leaving Vincent to flee to Charley's house. There he is surprised by Ed, who attacks him in the form of a wolf, only to be pierced through the heart with a broken table leg held by Vincent. Removing the stake from Ed's corpse, Vincent goes to rescue Charley and battle Dandridge. Meanwhile, Charley is locked in with Amy, who is slowly transforming into a vampire. Vincent manages to free him before she awakens, and says the process can be reversed if they destroy Jerry before dawn. Charley and Vincent are then confronted by Billy, who is revealed to be an undead, though non-vampiric servant, and manage to destroy him, melting him into goo and sand. Jerry appears, but Vincent is able to lure the overconfident vampire in front of a window using a crucifix (now working due to his renewed faith in its abilities). Just before the morning sun, Jerry transforms into a bat and attacks Vincent and Charley before fleeing to his coffin in the basement. Charley and Vincent pursue Jerry; Vincent breaks open Jerry's coffin and tries to stake him through the heart while Charley fights off Amy, who has almost completed her transformation. By breaking the blacked-out windows in the basement, Vincent and Charley expose Jerry to the sunlight, destroying him. Jerry's destruction leads to Amy reverting to her human form, and the three embrace. A few nights later, Vincent returns to his Fright Night TV series and announces a hiatus from vampires by instead presenting Octaman. The series is being watched by Charley and Amy as they embrace in bed. As Charley gets up to turn off the TV, he at first sees red eyes in Jerry's now-vacant house, but dismisses them. Unbeknownst to both Charley and Amy, the still undead Ed (hiding in the darkness) laughs and says, "Oh, you're so cool, Brewster! " Cast [ edit] Chris Sarandon as Jerry Dandrige [5] William Ragsdale as Charley Brewster Amanda Bearse as Amy Peterson Roddy McDowall as Peter Vincent Stephen Geoffreys as Edward "Evil Ed" Thompson Jonathan Stark as Billy Cole Dorothy Fielding as Judy Brewster Art J. Evans as Detective Lennox Production [ edit] Development [ edit] While writing the script for Cloak & Dagger, [6] Tom Holland amused himself when he conceived the idea of a horror-movie fan becoming convinced that his next door neighbor was a vampire, but he didn't initially think this premise was enough to sustain a story. "What's he gonna do, " Holland asked, "because everybody's gonna think he's mad! " [7] The story percolated in his mind for a year and finally one day while discussing it with John Byers, then the head of the story department at Columbia Pictures, [6] he finally figured out what the boy would do. "Of course, he's gonna go to Vincent Price! '" [7] In that era, many local TV stations in the United States had horror hosts (such as Zacherle, Svengoolie, and the nationally syndicated Elvira), so Holland decided it would be natural for the boy to seek aid from his local host. "The minute I had Peter Vincent, I had the story. Charley Brewster was the engine, but Peter Vincent was the heart. " [8] Once he'd conceived that character, Holland knocked out the first draft of the script in three weeks. [6] [7] [9] "And I was laughing the entire time, literally on the floor, kicking my feet in the air in hysterics. " [6] Holland wrote the film for himself to direct, in part because he was so disheartened by the film that was ultimately made from his previous screenplay, Scream for Help, [7] [9] [10] and he'd developed enough of clout from the successes of his screenplays for Class of 1984, Psycho II, and Cloak & Dagger that the head of Columbia Pictures said, "Let's take a chance on the hot screenwriter kid, " [11] not figuring that Fright Night would be as successful as it ultimately became. Casting [ edit] The Peter Vincent character was named after horror icons Peter Cushing and Vincent Price, and Holland specifically wrote the part for Price, [6] [9] but at this point in his career, Price had been so badly typecast that he had stopped accepting roles in horror movies. [12] Guy McElwaine, then the head of Columbia Pictures, suggested Roddy McDowall for the part. [13] McDowall had already starred in the Holland-penned film Class of 1984, so Holland was immediately receptive to the suggestion. "He understood the part, " commented Holland, "and he also understood what he could do with it, and he really wanted it! " [8] McDowall was particularly interested in the genesis of the character. "In the film, I perform as being in my late 20s or early 30s in the film clips of my old movies-all the way up to my 60s, when I'm the washed-up hasbeen, " McDowall adding that the role interested him because, "I'd never played anything that old. " [14] Holland and McDowall built a lasting friendship, and McDowall eventually invited Holland to a dinner party where he introduced him to Vincent Price, who was flattered that the part was an homage to him and commented that the film "was wonderful and he thought Roddy did a wonderful job. " [6] Chris Sarandon 's agent gave him a copy of the script and he replied, “there’s no way I can do a horror movie, " [10] but he decided to give the script a once-over and was immediately captivated by it. "I thought this is one of the best scripts I've read in a long time, " Sarandon said, "beautifully constructed, it was obvious that this was a labor of love, it was clear that the writer/director's approach to it was one of wanting to have fun with the genre without making fun of it, the characters were beautifully drawn. " [9] Sarandon was worried about being typecast as a villain, but the script resonated with him because the story was deeper than just an average monster movie. "Forgetting about vampirism, what this film is about on one level is an older man trying to take a younger man's girl away from him, " commented Holland. [15] Although he liked the screenplay, Sarandon was still leery of working with a first-time director, so he flew to L. A. to meet Tom Holland and producer Herb Jaffe. He and Holland had an immediate rapport (and went on to make several more films together), and Sarandon was awed that Holland had the film so completely mapped out that he "literally described the movie shot-by-shot all the way through - page-by-page, scene-by-scene. It was basically the way he shot it. " [9] Jonathan Stark wasn't a fan of vampire films, but he also liked the script. The Billy Cole character was written as a hulking giant, so Stark padded himself with extra clothing when he went in to audition. [9] At auditions, he read the scene in which he's being questioned by the detective, which was written to be played straight. "I'm thinking if I'm sitting there being evil, " Stark commented, "the lieutenant's gonna get suspicious. Why not throw him off the trail by being funny? " [9] Holland liked his take on the character, and Stark was told that he had the part - but because he came into read at the start of the audition process, months passed before filming commenced and Stark worried that he'd lost the role. [16] The gap worked to his advantage, however, because it gave him time to hit the gym and bulk up so he wouldn't have to wear padding in the film. [9] William Ragsdale had auditioned to portray Rocky Dennis in Mask [10] [17] but he lost the role to Eric Stoltz. However, casting director Jackie Burch remembered his audition and thought he'd be right to portray Charley Brewster. Ragsdale auditioned several times and ultimately received the news that he'd landed the part on Halloween night 1984, [13] [16] beating out several other future-stars like Charlie Sheen. [18] Due to a mix-up, Stephen Geoffreys had an awkward audition for Anthony Michael Hall 's role in Weird Science, [10] and he made an indelible impression on Jackie Burch, who suggested him for Fright Night. Although he wasn't a horror movie fan, Geoffreys loved the script, so he called his agent and emphatically declared that he'd love to audition for Charley Brewster. “No, Steve, " his agent replied, "you’re wanted for the part of Evil Ed. ” [10] Geoffreys was simultaneously baffled and heartbroken. "What do they see in me that they think I should be this… well anyway, it worked out. " [10] The most difficult role to cast was Amy Peterson. "There wasn't the perfect girl next door until Amanda Bearse walked in, " Holland commented. [8] Pre-production [ edit] Once his cast was in place, Holland got input from each of the actors and made numerous revisions to the script. Some were slight and others were major - such as the ending which originally featured Peter Vincent transforming into a vampire as he returned to host Fright Night. [19] The September 6, 1984 draft of the screenplay-which is circulating online [5] -is very close to the final cut of the film, but a few more changes were still to come. The cast and crew were given the luxury of having two weeks of rehearsal time in late November 1984 prior to filming. [9] Holland blocked out the scenes on a soundstage and the cast performed the entire film like it was a stage play. Having begun his career as a classically trained actor, [20] Holland encouraged the cast to write biographies of their characters so they would completely understand their motivations and be able to draw on that information while filming their scenes. [9] [17] All of the kinks in the story/performances were ironed out during the rehearsal period, so when it came time to film, Holland only shot two or three takes of each scene and then moved on. [8] [9] As originally written, Jerry Dandrige was more villainous, so Sarandon tried to find various ways to humanize the vampire, [9] including suggesting the implication that the Amy character was the reincarnation of his long-lost love. "I wanted to give the audience something to hold onto in terms of understanding that this was someone who was at one time--and still is, in certain respects--a thinking, feeling human being, " Sarandon said. [21] "This is a man who has been hunted for all his post-human existence, but who has fallen in love a number of times and who, in a sense, longs for a normal existence. " Sarandon also did research into bats and discovered that the bulk of the world's bat population are Frugivores, so he concluded, "Jerry had a lot of fruit bat in his DNA. " [22] This explains why his character is frequently munching on apples, which Sarandon decided his character was using to "cleanse his palate" [9] after draining blood from his victims. Stark and Sarandon had not picked up on Holland's intended gay subtext when they were developing their characters. "I didn't have any sense of it as being anything other than Renfield and Dracula ", Chris Sarandon recalled. "I think there was sort of an asexual quality to the relationship that was sort of borderline homoerotic but not, in the sense that it was creepy. " [22] For the scene in which Jerry pulls down the window shade and it looks as though Billy is about to perform oral sex on him, Stark remembered, "I'm cleaning his hand and [Tom Holland] said, 'No, get down on your knees. ' 'Okay, Tom. ' Then when I saw [the film], I thought, 'Oooooh, okay. '" [22] McDowall also did a lot of work on his character, and made a conscious decision to pattern his performance after The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. [6] [8] [9] [14] "My part is that of an old ham actor, I mean a dreadful actor. He realizes it but doesn't admit it. He-had a moderate success in an isolated film here and there, but all very bad product. This poor sonofabitch just played the same character all the time, which was awful. And then he disappeared from sight, 15 years beforehand. He's been peddling these movies to late night tv, various syndicated markets - he'd go six months In Iowa, six months In Podunk. " [14] McDowall commented to Fangoria, "He's got such a sad life, he's sort of cowardly and then he finds his strength as a human being. " [23] Despite the pathetic character he was portraying, McDowall was a pillar for the cast and crew. "He was a kind of Yoda on the set, " commented Sarandon. Recalled Ragsdale, "He had his videocamera on his shoulder and he shooting, like, family movies the whole time. " [16] Sarandon recalled that Holland collaborated with choreographer Dorain Grusman in shooting a disco dance scene to have Bearse's character physically changing so that "she goes from this rather dewey, innocent-looking girl to this femme fatale; she kind of grows up right before your eyes" [24] The scene also established Amy discovering Jerry actually was a vampire. Filming [ edit] Principal photography commenced on December 3, 1984 and wrapped on February 23, 1985. At the time of production, Fright Night was Columbia's lowest-budgeted film and they did not have high expectations for it, so they were focusing all of their attention on the John Travolta / Jamie Lee Curtis film Perfect, which they were certain was going to be a blockbuster. [6] [9] [10] "They never even came to the set, " Holland said. "I was left alone. It was totally my film without studio interference. " [6] Generally filming went off without a hitch, but a few mishaps did abound, including an incident in which Ragsdale broke his ankle while running down a staircase. The schedule had to be reorganized but filming soldiered on. "Nobody panicked. In fact, I think that the thing I'll remember most about this movie is everyone's spirit and humor. " [25] The cast and crew seemed to meld with a singular vision of making the best movie possible. Early in production, Holland invited Fangoria writer Abbie Bernstein to visit the set as often as she liked, and she took him up on his offer. Of the wrap party in March, Bernstein wrote, "It's fun and pleasant, but it lacks the intense camaraderie of the set. " [23] Make-up and visual effects [ edit] Richard Edlund was the head of visual effects, and his team had just completed work on Ghostbusters, which worked to the advantage of Fright Night. "They had made all of their mistakes with how to do the matte shots and everything on Ghostbusters, with their huge budget, " Holland commented, "and so they really knew how to do [the special effects] as inexpensively and efficiently as it could be done at the time. " [11] The most excruciating part of the makeup process for the cast were the contact lenses. In those days the lenses were hard plastic, which Steve Johnson hand-painted (throwing some glitter into the mix), lacquered and sanded. [22] The cast could only wear them for a maximum of 20 minutes because they were virtually blind in them, and they were thick, painful and dried out their eyes. A set was made for Stark to wear when he's in his final pursuit of Peter and Charley, but he kept tripping on the stairs. Holland told him to take one out, and he was then able to perform the scene. [9] [22] Three sets were made for Amanda Bearse, but one of them caused her agonizing pain which she initially tried to endure. When it finally became too much to bear, she took the contacts out and the crew realized they'd forgotten to buff them. [22] For the scene in Mrs. Brewster's bedroom, Geoffreys kept his contacts in for nearly 40 minutes, resulting in scratches on his eyeballs for months afterward. [22] For the transformation sequences, it took up to 8 hours to prepare Sarandon's makeup. [13] Sarandon was uncomfortable spending that long sitting in a chair doing nothing, and since he'd had experience doing his own makeup for his work on the stage, he volunteered to help. He did some of the stippling and, while the makeup men were applying prosthetics to his face and head, he worked on the finger extensions. [9] [17] Sarandon has often joked that the rubber fingers caused difficulties whenever he had to urinate, so costume supervisor Mort Schwartz constantly offered to help him. [9] [17] "I said to Morry, 'Thank you, no, I'll just use a coat hanger! '" [17] Co-star Ragsdale recalled one instance when Sarandon spent an entire day in the makeup chair and when he was finally fully transformed into the monster, a producer informed him that they were not going to be able to shoot the scene that day. "And Chris said, 'Okay, ' and turned around and went and took it off, it was amazing! " Ragsdale exclaimed. "I would have gone through the roof but he didn't. His will had been broken by that point! " [17] The makeup for Evil Ed's wolf transformation took 18 hours. [22] While he had the wolf head on, the crew began pouring what they thought was Methylcellulose into his mouth to create the illusion of saliva, but when Geoffreys began to complain about the taste, Mark Bryan Wilson realized they'd been using prosthetic adhesive, which was gluing his mouth shut. [22] On Christmas Eve, during the shooting of a scene where he's running down a staircase, Ragsdale accidentally tripped and broke his ankle, resulting in the film being temporarily put on a hold until he could recover. "Rod Martin, a trainer for the Los Angeles Raiders, came in every day to wrap the foot for me, and the shooting schedule was rearranged to put off the action sequences until it mended. " said Ragsdale. [25] Many scenes were shot with his foot in a cast, including the scene in which Jerry comes to Charley's room to attack him. For shots in which Charley's feet were visible, the costumers slit Ragsdale's shoes in several places, slipped them on and then covered the portions of white cast which peeked through the slits with black cloth. [23] For the scene in which Jerry is carrying Charley by the throat with one hand, Sarandon was simultaneously pushing Ragsdale along on a furniture dolly. [22] The shot of Jerry pulling the pencil out of his hand was achieved by having a spring-loaded collapsible pencil glued to his palm and an eraser-tip loosely attached to the back of his hand. When he turns his hand and pulls the spring-loaded piece from his palm, out of shot a monofilament wire jerked away the tip, so when he turns it back it appears as though he's pulled it straight through his hand. "So we go to the editing room, " FX man Steve Johnson recalled of an early cut, "and Tom had put a reaction in the middle of it, ruined the entire shot! " [22] The crew attempted to achieve the illusion of the cross-scar vanishing from Evil Ed's forehead live on-set, but effect was a resounding failure. In that pre-digital age, Edlund's crew was able to alter the film utilizing optical photography to achieve the effect. [22] Filming of the sequence with the bat was difficult for effects veteran Randall Cook, who kept winding up on film while puppeteering the creature. Further complications ensued when the bat tries to bite Roddy McDowall's character and he forces a bone into its mouth; there was difficulty getting the puppet to bite, and then McDowall jerked the bone too hard and broke the bat's skull. [23] The bat was quickly patched, but required repairs forced them to wait two days to shoot more close-ups. Critical reception [ edit] This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it. ( August 2016) Fright Night garnered critical acclaim, holding a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes; the average rating is 7. 3/10 based on 33 reviews. The site's consensus reads: " Fright Night deftly combines thrills and humor in this ghostly tale about a man living next to a vampire. " [32] Roger Ebert gave the film three out of four stars and wrote, " Fright Night is not a distinguished movie, but it has a lot of fun being undistinguished". [33] Variety praised Sarandon's performance, citing that he "is terrific as the vampire, quite affable and debonair until his fingernails start to grow and his eyes get that glow". [39] Sequel [ edit] After the critical and financial success of Fright Night, producer Herb Jaffe retained the screen rights to the characters and pushed for a sequel to be made. [40] Although he was unhappy that the budget was drastically slashed, Holland was interested but he and Sarandon were both tied up making Child's Play and could not commit to the film, though director Tommy Lee Wallace sought out Holland for advice [10] and Sarandon visited the set while they were shooting. [10] Stephen Geoffreys was approached to reprise the role of Evil Ed, but he didn't like the script and he was offered the lead in 976-EVIL, which was scheduled to shoot at the same time, so he opted to take that part instead. [41] [42] Bearse read an early draft of the script which included the Amy character, [10] but she was busy with her TV series Married... with Children, so a new girlfriend (portrayed by Traci Lind) was written for Charley Brewster. In the end, only Ragsdale and McDowall reprised their roles, [43] and a new set of villains was devised. Third film [ edit] From all accounts, McDowall relished playing Peter Vincent and was eager to bring Holland back to the franchise, so he had set up a meeting for himself and Holland with Carolco Pictures chairman Jose Menendez [44] to discuss making Fright Night Part 3. [40] Unfortunately, before that meeting could occur, Menendez and his wife were infamously murdered by their sons, Lyle and Erik. Not only did this stop another sequel, it also interfered with the release of Fright Night Part 2, which attained extremely limited theatrical distribution before being dumped on home video by Carolco's subsidiary, Live Entertainment. [10] [44] In January 2017, Tom Holland announced that he was writing a Fright Night 3 novel and that in 2019 he would obtain the rights to the franchise and that a third movie would be happening. [45] Documentary film [ edit] Chris Griffiths directed, along with producer Gary Smart, the 2016 documentary film You're So Cool Brewster! The Story of Fright Night. [46] Adaptations [ edit] Comic books [ edit] Between 1988-1993, NOW Comics published 27 Fright Night comic books. The original film was adapted as the first two issues of the series, Fright Night Part 2 was adapted as a stand-alone graphic novel (which was not canonical with the series), and the rest of the issues consisted of original stories following the further exploits of Peter Vincent and Charley Brewster, who teamed up to battle a vast array of vampires and monsters. Amy Peterson and Billy Cole only appeared in the first two issues, but Evil Ed returned to become a constant foil and Jerry Dandrige was ultimately resurrected and had just begun to amass an army of Parisian vampire prostitutes when the company filed for bankruptcy [47] and production was abruptly halted in 1990 with issue #22. After corporate restructuring, a series of four annual 3-D issues were released between 1992–93, three of which were 3-D reprints and one which was a previously unpublished story. Novelization [ edit] Tor Books published a novelization, Fright Night, by Craig Spector and John Skipp in 1985. [48] Working from Holland's screenplay, Skipp and Spector only had a month to write the book so it could be published to coincide with the release of the film. [49] The book follows the story of the film but includes additional details about the characters and their relationships. [13] The novel has been out of print for decades, and resale prices wildly vary. [ citation needed] Video game [ edit] An arcade-style computer game was released by Microdeal in 1988 for Amiga computers. In the game, players assume the role of Jerry Dandrige as he attempts to turn his victims into vampires before sunrise. [50] Stage [ edit] The official stage adaptation of Fright Night celebrated its world premiere at Carnegie Stage in Pittsburgh, PA on October 5, 2018. It was written and directed by James Michael Shoberg and produced by The Rage of the Stage Players. The original cast included Dan Finkel as Charley Brewster, Elena Cristina Lázaro as Amy Petersen, Greg Crawford as Peter Vincent, Ryan Ott as Billy Cole, Brian Ceponis as Jerry Dandrige, Amanda Anne Leight as Judy Brewster, Corey Shaffer as "Evil" Ed Thompson, Dave Joseph as Lieutenant Detective Lennox, Ryan Frank as Donny, and Edward Bates as Leon. [51] Remakes [ edit] Unofficial Indian remake [ edit] In 1989, the film was unofficially remade in India as Kalpana House. [52] [53] Set at Christmastime, this version mirrors the original film, but the Peter Vincent character's occupation was changed to a priest, a few additional characters and scenes were added, and it includes several Bollywood -like musical numbers. The dialogue and credits are primarily in Malayalam, but all of the actors casually drift in and out of English. 2011 American remake [ edit] In May 2009, DreamWorks first announced that it would be overseeing a remake of Fright Night, [54] which came to fruition and was released in 2011 with the same title: Fright Night. The script, penned by Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Marti Noxon, loosely followed the plot of the original film. Charley ( Anton Yelchin) and his mother ( Toni Collette) are transplanted from Corvalis, IA to a Las Vegas suburb; Amy ( Imogen Poots) is feistier and sexually aggressive; Evil Ed ( Christopher Mintz-Plasse) has endured a falling out with Charley prior to the start of the film; Peter Vincent ( David Tennant) is a horror magician modeled after Criss Angel; the Billy Cole character was omitted; and Jerry Dandrige ( Colin Farrell) is no longer the lovelorn vampire. He's described by Evil Ed as "the fucking shark from Jaws " and has different intentions for his victims. Sarandon was offered a role in the 2011 remake and chose to pass on the torch by doing a cameo as a man who's eaten by Jerry Dandrige. Sarandon pointed out that "It's not the original and they didn't set out to make the original, " but the cast and crew of the remake "were all huge fans. " [17] Farrell had watched the film countless times during his youth and publicly stated, "I heard they were remaking Fright Night and went, ‘Ah, god, remake! Hollywood, so dull! And I read the script and really hoped I didn't like it, and I did. [55] Recalled Sarandon of his first encounter with Farrell, "He walked in and he literally was almost shaking, he was so excited at the prospect of meeting his childhood idol. He gave me a beautiful bottle of wine and a DVD set of the Carl Dreyer Vampyr. It was a really graceful and wonderful introduction. " [56] During a reunion panel discussion at Monsterpalooza in 2012, the cast of the original film discussed the remake at length. Bearse commented that "as a stand-alone horror movie, it was very well done. It didn't lessen the appeal of the original. It was just more of a one-note film. " [17] Geoffreys only watched the first 20 minutes and then turned it off. Stark and Ragsdale went to a screening and discovered they "were the only two people" in attendance. [17] Ragsdale liked an early draft of the screenplay, but he wasn't particularly enamored with the final result and was perplexed that "there was kind of a nastiness to" the Evil Ed character. [17] The discussion dragged on for so long that the audience roared with laughter when Sarandon sarcastically interrupted Ragsdale to declare, "I'm sure there are some other questions about the original Fright Night. " [17] When asked his thoughts in 2015, creator Tom Holland replied, "Kudos to them on every level for their professionalism, but they forgot the humor and the heart. They should have called it something other than Fright Night, because it had no more than a passing resemblance to the original. What they did to Jerry Dandrige and Peter Vincent was criminal. " Smiling, he added, "Outside of that, it was wonderful. " [57] See also [ edit] Vampire film References [ edit] ^ " FRIGHT NIGHT (18)". British Board of Film Classification. September 10, 1985. Lo sceicco bianco Watch stream online. "Our real lives are in our dreams, but sometimes dreams are a fatal abyss."
That line above is one of the most beautiful lines I've ever heard in any film. This 1951 comedy feature is free of Fellini's quintessential surrealist vision but filled with the delights of idiosyncratic imagery, genius comical precision, and indisputable humanity.
The film opens in Rome, where a newlywed small-town couple is vacationing on their honeymoon. While in Rome, the (very) young bride takes advantage of being near the location where a new film is being shot that stars The White Sheik, a popular film/serial/newspaper icon whom she is secretly infatuated with. While her husband is sleeping, she sneaks off to find the Sheik and give him a drawing she has made of him. Brunella Bovo, who plays the bride, is new to me, but she was absolutely entrancing in her innocence. Trieste's comic expressions are absolutely arresting. Sordi is hilarious as the Sheik, who is about as unromantic a romantic figure as you can imagine.

Nino Rota's first score for Fellini is a lot of fun and exceptionally carnivalesque. You can tell by the marriage of music and image that Fellini and Rota had a real treasured creative hit-off with this film, and as most know, Rota scored every Fellini film after "White Sheik" until his death in 1979. This great score has never been released in it's entirety, but the main title theme has appeared on many Rota compilations.
An absolutely adorable little film, which seems to have been regrettably ignored by the majority. It's one I will watch many times.

Everyone who follows news and headlines and political stories knows about the tales and supposed happenings at the "FOX News Channel. No matter your political stance or leanings if you've ever watched the channel over the years you've clearly seen that most all of the female news anchors and reporters were hot and very sexy really some eye candy for any viewer. This picture from director Jay Roach in which I describe somewhat drama, dark comedy, bio type is one revealing brash sexy look at an atmosphere and culture of a good old boys club and how their leader the powerful Roger Ailes(John Lithgow) conducted dirty laundry type business with his female employees behind closed doors.
The focus and wild card players here are top news anchors and reporters Megyn Kelly(in a fine and near real look alike performance from Charlize Theron) and Gretchen Carlson(Nicole Kidman) who after years of apparent sexual harassment blow the lead off of his powerful company. As it was exposed the network was a toxic culture for most all of it's female employees. Most catching is seeing Kayla(the sexy Margot Robbie I love her in that sexy black strapless bra scene) a fictional composite character which was inspired by many of Roger's supposed accusers, as Kayla is the poster girl and foot solider employee one who marches along with the network's message of values, faith, morals, and right wing politics only she's soon exposed to the backroom advances of sexual misconduct.
Thru the film it's filled with much drama and fun black heart like humor like scenes of "FOX" News employees in meetings and spotlighted is Kelly's war of words with Trump during his 2016 presidential run. And the scenes of Roger in his office with females is certainly interesting and really a spin for four play and get under the sheets advances. The film is also revealing especially when you see the scene when it swoops in on the chatter and showcased chaos of the ladies' wardrobe room at "Fox News" it's clear that all are news Barbies and sexy colored bra wearing ladies. This was the way that big Rog wanted it as good looks shined and made his network a media ratings darling, as all viewers saw the eye candy of lady anchors and reporters in short skirts.
Aside from that this movie is a wake up call for women as each lead character finally has the courage and voice to speak and fight power and get moral justice as this was just another step that would help power the "Me Too Movement. As it's footage and real news reports takes you the viewer back to these tense and groundbreaking times of scandal and downfall. The chemistry and performances from the cast is all pro and in top notch form from Lithgow, Kidman, Robbie, and Theron as they each feed off each one's emotions and story. The style of the film is sexy, tabloid like he said she said still the big weapon is that all of the ladies use their world of mouth and collected stories from past supposed victims of Roger's to speak and bring truth to power as each had a right to do so as exposure and feeling compensated belonged to each of them.

Mystify 3a michael hutchence remix. Mystify 3a michael hutchence review. Mystify: Michael Hutchence is a 2019 documentary film about the life of musician, actor and singer-songwriter Michael Hutchence, lead vocalist of the Australian rock band INXS. It is written and directed by Richard Lowenstein and relies primarily on rare archive footage, outtakes, private home video and audio commentary provided by friends, ex-partners, band members, record producers and family. An Australian-British venture, the film was co-produced by Ghost Pictures, Passion Pictures with Madman Entertainment and Dogwoof serving as distributors. It is in association with Baird Films and Film Victoria. Mystify: Michael Hutchence had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on 25 April 2019, and was theatrically released in Australia on 4 July 2019. [4] 7] The film was released in the United Kingdom on 18 October receiving generally positive reviews from critics. Synopsis Mystify covers the life of INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence which features private home video and archive footage. During the relationship between Minogue and Hutchence, previously unseen privately shot footage shows them in Hong Kong harbour, on board the orient express, and at Hutchences home in the south of France. In the early 1990s an incident occurred while bicycling on holiday in Copenhagen with then girlfriend Helena Christensen, where Hutchence gets shoved to the ground by a taxi driver, hitting his head on the curb and losing consciousness. According to Christensen, Hutchence was rushed to hospital and woke up determined to leave. The injury resulted in Hutchence having permanent loss of sense of smell and taste. Clips show Yates and Michael Hutchence in a 1985 interview on Channel 4 's rock magazine programme The Tube and many years later on The Big Breakfast interview in October 1994. Recollections with voice-overs in the film include Michele Bennett, Kylie Minogue, siblings Rhett and Tina Hutchence, father Kelland Hutchence, stepmother Susie, producer Nick Launay, Bono and INXS band members, composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, bassist Garry Gary Beers and drummer Jon Farriss. The film ends with INXS performing at Londons Wembley Stadium and the song "Mystify" plays over the credits. Production Development Plans for a biographical drama film about Michael Hutchence were being developed with a script written by Australian film-maker Richard Lowenstein. Lowenstein had previously collaborated with Hutchence in Dogs in Space and INXS music videos. The film was to feature an actor as Hutchence, however the idea of casting someone proved very difficult and with the announcement of the miniseries INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, it made the director switch to an archival documentary. [8] The documentary film gathered early development funding and support by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Screen Australia and Film Victoria. [9] A pitch trailer was produced and shown at the 2016 Australian International Documentary Conference in Melbourne where BBC Music took interest. [9] In July 2016, it was announced that a documentary film about the singer-songwriter Michael Hutchence had the official support of INXS band members and manager Chris Murphy, with Richard Lowenstein signed on to direct. [10] 11] 12] 13] The director conducted the first interview (for the biopic research) in 2010 with U2 lead singer Bono who were on tour in Melbourne. Band members from INXS were then interviewed and filmed in 2011, gradually building up an archive of footage. [14] 15] During the interview process, Lowenstein had decided to record just the audio, having individual interviewees in a dark recording studio. A total of around sixty people were interviewed. [16] 15] Tapes of archival footage of varying quality were found in the directors attic lost for twenty years. [15] In October 2017, long negotiations began for the rights to use INXS music in the film, but ended with no deal due to a dispute with Murphy of Petrol Records over the documentarys ownership in return. This lead the director to produce an edit of the film with no music from the INXS catalogue. [15] Eventually, Lowenstein made contact with Hutchences daughter Tiger Lily (the daughter of Hutchence and Paula Yates) in London, through Susie Hutchences advice. Lowenstein flew to London in October 2018 to meet. After viewing a rough cut of the film, Tiger Lily made contact with the bands management and record company. A day later, a deal was struck to use nine INXS tracks. [15] The post-production and supervision of the film were completed by United Finishing Artists with the sound mixing done at Soundfirm, Melbourne. [17] Music Composer Warren Ellis was in charge of the film's music and score. [18] The documentary features various digitally-restored tracks which were remixed by Giles Martin in Dolby Atmos supplied by INXS. Music also included are by Hutchence, Max Q with Ollie Olsen, Kylie Minogue, Nick Cave, instrumentals by Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm. [19] The film includes tracks, such as. Never Tear Us Apart " and " Sometimes. 20] Lowenstein stated that there has been no official soundtrack album released, 15] however, a complementary album was released on 5 July 2019 titled Mystify: A Musical Journey with Michael Hutchence. Release The world premiere of Mystify: Michael Hutchence took place in Manhattan at the Tribeca Film Festival on 25 April 2019, including a live Q&A session with the films director after the screening. [21] Over the next few months it played in festivals around Canada, Australia, Czech Republic, Germany and New Zealand, building anticipation: at the Hot Docs in Toronto, Sydney, Munich and New Zealand Film Festivals. [22] 23] 24] 25] Advance screenings with Lowenstein in attendance for special Q&A sessions followed in June, at the Astor Theatre in Melbourne, Ritz Cinema in Sydney and the European premiere held at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. [26] 27] 28] An official trailer was released on 4 June 2019 and featured the songs " Mystify " and " Never Tear Us Apart " by INXS. [29] 30] It was released in cinemas across Australia on 4 July and in New Zealand on 12 September through Madman Entertainment. [31] Initially the film was screened out of competition during the BFI London Film Festival on 4 October 2019 at the Curzon Mayfair Cinema [32] 33] and then released in the United Kingdom on 18 October through Dogwoof. The Netherlands saw a release on 24 October by Piece of Magic entertainment. [34] 35] In the United States Fathom Events and Shout! Factory will theatrically release the film for one-night-only on 7 January 2020. [36] Broadcast In Australia, the documentary was aired by ABC Television during 24 November 2019. [37] Channel BBC Two aired the film in the UK on 28 December. [38] Home media It was released on DVD, digital and Blu-ray disc in Australia by Madman Entertainment on 25 November 2019. [39] It contains twelve special features including early days - where they discuss the bands formation, acting, discussing Prague where three INXS music videos were filmed and Professor of Psychiatry, Steve Ellens analyses into Hutchences death. [40] Dogwoof released the film in the U. K. and Ireland on 9 December. Also missed, in excess. 69] Graham Fuller of Screen International called the film a "Stand-out documentary" and wrote, The densely woven and worshipfully presented archival footage of the INXS frontman, on stage and off, is a reminder that in terms of wild talent and Dionysian sexiness, he belongs in the same company as Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, and Robert Plant. He concludes: What lifts it above the majority of documentaries about celebrities and artists is its extraordinary intimacy. 4] Harry Windsor, writing for the Hollywood Reporter, said: It should prove essential viewing for the subject's fans: a tender portrait of the man's highs and lows that sheds new light on the broken years that directly preceded his suicide at 37. 70] Leigh Paatsch writing for the Herald Sun gave the film 4/5 stars, saying: Quite wisely, the new documentary Mystify: Michael Hutchence doesn't concern itself with smoothing out all the erroneous wrinkles that have crumpled the late INXS frontman's life story over time. 71] Karl Quinn of The Age called the film Lowenstein's "slow-burning labour of love. 72] The Australian 's David Stratton summed up the film as "a terrific documentary, and as complete a portrait of this talented singer as you could wish. calling it "a detailed and revealing portrait" he rated the film four out of five stars. [73] Vicky Roach from The Daily Telegraph gave the film 3 out of 5, saying: While its more visually interesting, there are times when this storytelling device results in a kind of emotional disconnect. And although they corroborate Lowensteins version of events, the bands role in Hutchences story feels strangely under-amplified — emotionally and musically. She summed up the film as "A measured, personal, densely woven account of the man behind the myth. 74] DM Bradley, writing for the Adelaide Review, said: Richard Lowensteins beautifully sad documentary study of the all-too-short life of his late friend Michael Hutchence is a most moving memorial, and rather more about the man than the music. 75] Graeme Tuckett from gave the film 3. 5 out of 5 stars, saying: Mystify is unapologetically one for the fans. But, seeing it as someone who thought he didn't particularly care about Hutchence's story, I was moved. 76] Eddie Harrison of The List awarded the film 4 out of 5 stars, remarking that "Mystify can only be a cautionary tale, yet there's plenty of evidence that Hutchence was an electrifying performer in his prime. 77] Time Out s, Philip De Semlyen described it "As the tragedy unfolds, there's a strange solace in seeing this captivating enigma somehow emerging intact" giving it 4 out of 5 marks. [78] The Sunday Times Edward Porter gave it three out of five stars, wrote "There are insights into the gloomy later years, but it's memorable chiefly for its envy-inducing picture of the upside of being a rock star. 79] Accolades ASSG Best Sound for a Documentary: Robert Mackenzie - Re-Recording Mixer & Sound Designer, Simon Rosenberg - Dialogue Editor, Mick Boraso - Sound Designer, Lynn-Maree Milburn - Additional Sound Designer. It was 10. 30am and Helena Christensen was in Michael Hutchences kitchen, carefully unpacking her shopping, which mainly consisted of expensive crockery shed bought from a nearby village. There was no fruit, no vegetables and no wine. Following an accident a few months earlier, after which the INXS singer had largely lost his sense of taste and smell, there had been a lot less emphasis on meals in the Hutchence household, as all olfactory, food and wine-related matters were slowly de-emphasised. The live-in housekeeper fussed around Christensen as Hutchence sipped a cold Carlsberg, the first of many that day. He didnt need to taste it to feel its effect. The sun was quickly rising behind the tiny olive grove and all appeared to be well with the world. This was a celebrity interview, 1993 style: a weekend spent with a rock star and his supermodel girlfriend in his whitewashed villa near a little town called Valbonne on the French Riviera. On the face of it, this was the typical rock star retreat, furnished with Conran Shop sofas, scented candles and Third World bits and pieces from a shop called David Wainwright on Portobello Road, which, at the time, was ridiculously, almost stupidly, fashionable. A satellite dish jutted out of the lavender, opposite the long, covered breakfast terrace and the lip-sided swimming pool. A gardener glided across the lawn on one of those mowing machines that look like small tanks. The place – called Venus and bought by Hutchence four years previously, when every member of INXS had started to become flush with cash – was not particularly opulent or ostentatious. Various friends and gofers milled about: one was painting a mural on a bedroom wall; another was harassing a travel agent on his mobile phone; while Christensen and her friend and fellow model Gail Elliott sunbathed topless by the pool. What was the point in being a supermodel and having a rock star boyfriend if you werent going to take advantage of the sun and sunbathe by the pool? Hutchence photographed in West Hollywood, February 1991 Ron Galella, Ltd. In person, the 33-year-old Hutchence looked bigger than he had ever done on video, without any of the boy-girl Sandra Bernhard looks he seemed to affect in pictures and on film. Ridiculously good-looking, his face nevertheless bore traces of a pockmarked youth, his stubble was anything but designer and, like your humble journalist, he spoke with a lisp (Hutchence did a mean Karl Lagerfeld impression. His hair was tousled like Mick Jagger s, though unlike Jagger, he didnt have that huge labial smile. He was courteous and personable, without much of the disingenuous familiarity practised by so many rock stars. Like INXS music, he appeared bright but uncomplicated, with no obvious side to him. Though he did like his booze. Hutchence bore all the hallmarks of a bona fide Nineties rock star: he smoked and drank, admitted to taking drugs (for him, getting “fucked up” was part of his job) and was dating a supermodel. And, conceivably more importantly – at least at the time – he wore a black leather waistcoat, like Bono, Depeche Modes Dave Gahan and the man he was most often physically compared to at the time, Jim Morrison. Oh, and despite the fact he was the focal point of INXS, he wasnt a supreme egotist; an egotist, yes, but not an unbearable one (a few years before we met, the band had turned down a Rolling Stone cover because the magazine would only put Hutchence on the front. “In this band its all for one and one for all, ” he said to me at one point that weekend, leaning over his distressed-oak dining-room table. “So its out of friendship, I suppose, that I have played down the sex-symbol thing. Its nothing more than a tongue-in-cheek distraction. I have never been the leader as such and I suppose Andrew [Farriss, who cowrote most of INXS classic songs] is a sort of phantom leader. So I guess we kind of share that. Im a team player. ” ‘Fame is indiscriminate. But once youre in the club it doesnt matter why or how you got there INXS were always a major rock band, albeit not quite among the elite, like, say, U2, in whose shadow they occasionally squatted. The band reached this position through sheer hard work, by spending the first 15 years of their career relentlessly touring, playing everywhere from Adelaide to Iowa (in 1981 they played 300 dates in Australia alone. They started life as The Farriss Brothers in Sydney 1977 (apart from Hutchence, the band was Tim, Andrew and Jon Farriss, Kirk Pengilly and bass player Garry “Gary” Beers) before changing their name to the far more digestible INXS in 1979. “When I started in this group, I was a dipshit from Fuckoff, Nowhere, sitting in the back of the room, shaking, ” said Hutchence. Enormous success in their homeland was followed by international fame when they finally cracked the US in 1984, having dropped their sub-New Romantic blousy styles for a more orthodox rock‘nroll look. “I must be one of the most effeminate singers in Australia and it caused us problems in the early days. Well, I dunno, mate, its what they do overseas, innit? But Australian culture is so odd that people got intrigued. We became a curiosity. ” The extensive touring promoted a succession of increasingly effective LPs, including Listen Like Thieves (1985) Kick (1987) X (1990) and Welcome To Wherever You Are from 1992. The band also had their share of hit singles: “Need You Tonight”, “Heaven Sent”, “Suicide Blonde”. Never extraordinary, INXS were always reliable, struck the requisite rock poses and, as one journalist noted, could “carry a tune powerfully and dependently, much in the way that a brickie carries a hod”. With success, though, came languor and INXS found it necessary to dabble in a bit of reinvention, pouring old wine into new bottles. Earlier in 1993 they had embarked on a no-frills tour of small venues instead of the arenas and stadiums they were used to playing. (The band mingled freely with hacks, hangers-on and fans in unpretentious warm-lager-and-crisps après-gig scenarios – and appeared to enjoy it. Very Nineties. Live, INXS really made sense. As tight as they should have been after 16 years together, the recent tour also highlighted Hutchences easy bond with his audience. He combined charisma and a brand of avuncular charm with statutory rock god poses, removing his shorts and orchestrating some very rocknroll stage diving antics. You spent a lot of time smiling at an INXS gig. It was an irony-free zone. If the band had hailed from the US, there was only one state they could have come from: California. Irony apart, comparisons with U2 were easily made, although INXS always looked as though they were studiously copying Bono and co. And whereas Bonos lyrics appeared to be cathartic, INXS often seemed pedestrian, a bit plonky. It would be unfair to call Hutchence Bono-lite, but he was certainly aware of the comparisons. It was a mistake to suddenly start playing small venues, too, because although it allowed Hutchence to “reconnect” with the INXS audience, and while it allowed those enthusiasts at the concerts to feel as though their favourite band were playing their local pool hall or wedding venue, to the outside world it simply looked as though INXS werent as popular as they used to be. During the Nineties, U2 were constantly reinventing the stadium experience, playing around with video, secondary stages and even the architecture of the stadiums themselves, turning an impersonal experience into a universally personal one; INXS, meanwhile, just looked like they didnt have enough fans to support a full-blown tour. ‘When I first got into ecstasy I had a guy on the road with me with a big jar of it. It was almost the break-up of the band INXS also had a habit of musically doing what U2 did, only six months later and never quite as successfully. When Bono and co went “disco” at the turn of the decade and when they started getting a bit dark, a bit European and a bit “anti-rock”, so INXS eventually attempted their own karaoke version of the template. That weekend in Provence, we talked about U2 a lot and while I was at first nervous about bringing them up (in the same way that journalists were initially nervous about accusing Noel Gallagher of being too obsessed with The Beatles) it was Hutchence who usually insinuated them into the conversation. They had asked U2 producer Brian Eno if he would like to remix their song “Im Only Looking”, but Hutchence seemed to get defensive when he told me about it. “I was [even] worried about using Eno because of his association with U2, ” he told me. “But fuck it, hes a free party and he liked the song. We send our songs to lots of people with views to remixes. We went shopping. ” Most musicians will usually refer to their own back catalogue if asked who theyre competing against, but not Hutchence. For him, there was an industry benchmark that he seemed to think his band hadnt quite reached. “Our peers, ” he blurted out before Id even finished the question. “Our peers and everyone who came before us. Everyone. Thats who were up against. Its ego. Its healthy. Its a game of poker – they play their cards and we play ours. This is not something we generally talk about. Were all very friendly people generally, when we meet each other, but behind their backs its different. In Australia you learn to take success from numbers. Its all about bums on seats. Its always been a people thing, so weve tended to measure success by how many people come to see us. Who cares if were not as good as the next guy? Everyone always played the same pubs – us, Midnight Oil, Crowded House, Hunters & Collectors, Nick Cave – so you always knew who was drawing the bigger crowd. “Twenty years ago you just didnt buy records by Australian artists. In those days most people copied overseas artists and there was very little homegrown creativity. Up until recently very few overseas people toured Australia. The Beatles came, of course, but that was a big deal, but hardly anyone came in the mid Seventies. Deep Purple… when they came it was front-page news. ” With so few home-grown rocknroll role models, Hutchence and co had to look abroad for their inspiration. They became pop-cultural sponges, soaking up the remnants of punk (Australian punk band The Saints were local heroes) and the burgeoning disco wave and mixing it with traditional Australian pop-rock. This is the well that INXS drank from, the low-alcohol cocktail that made them famous. “The pub scene consisted of Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, The Angels, all those macho, guitar-based bands, ” Hutchence said, as he lay on his lawn while Christensen played with her Walkman several feet away. “We were one of those at first, because if you didnt play in a pub in those days you were nowhere. They were sweaty, violent places and pub -culture was very nationalistic. It still is, in fact. What made us different was that we tried to acclimatise Australians to our love of soul and funk, mixing it with rock music. We tried to mix all three things together. It wasnt altruistic, just fun. “Australian people, at least those in Sydney and Melbourne, are a lot less naive about music than in a lot of major cities Ive been to. Its the eternal hunger for whats new. Its constant inferiority. ‘Am I OK? Do I look all right? In fact, when I finally came to London I was incredibly disappointed at the quality of the music scene. Because everything is filtered before it gets to Australia, so its like manna from heaven. Everyones perfect because theyre from overseas, mate. Or at least the craps been cut out along the way because it doesnt make it. So we get the best. We get the best version of the best. ” ‘In this band its all for one and one for all. I played down the sex-symbol thing. I have never been the leader It was perhaps this cultural vacuum, and their understanding of it, which initially made Hutchence and INXS so tenacious, something borne out by their long-standing manager Chris Murphy: “I used to compare INXS work patterns to a sportsmans. A sportsman doesnt walk out at Wembley and suddenly win the match. Hes trained and trained to get himself into that position. With INXS we took exactly the same approach. If we werent working one night, wed be rehearsing. If we werent rehearsing, we were recording. If we werent recording, we were playing. ” “We became known because we worked bloody hard, ” said Hutchence. “In the studio from midnight to dawn, then rehearsing and then playing. We never stopped. Practically as soon as we left school we all moved into a house together and totally went for it. It was the band or nothing. There was amazing perseverance. Peter Garrett from Midnight Oil once asked me how we achieved what we did and the answer is simply hard work. Weve worked harder than most people. Its the pub ethic that keeps us going – getting better than anyone else. ” Hutchence worked hard elsewhere, too, channelling his rocknroll heroes by partying as though it had just been made legal – not that there was anything very legal about the partying. As a friend of mine who spent a considerable amount of time with him during the late Eighties and early Nineties said, Hutchence drank and took drugs in a robustly Australian way: never take a half when half a dozen were available – heroin, cocaine, ecstasy and all points in between and beyond. During the acid house craze he even had a strobe light and a smoke machine in his dressing room. “I was an idiot, but a lovable idiot, ” Hutchence said. Cigarettes would regularly fall from his mouth as he failed to grip them with his lips and when he walked into a room drinks would fall over like skittles. (Asked at the time if he ever worried that he might be developing a drinking problem, he replied, “I enjoy drinking as much as I enjoy not drinking. ”) He was doing what all nascent rock stars do: paaarty, hard, with conviction, and with no thought as to what tomorrow might bring. In spite of this, INXS became the embodiment of a new pop culture, one that MTV turned into an art form: be everywhere at once! ‘Were up against our peers and everyone who came before us. Its a game of poker – they play their cards and we play ours After the global success of Kick, released in 1987, Hutchence cut his hair and donned expensive designer suits and started wearing glasses in public (he was appallingly short-sighted. He said this was to try to diffuse some of the “sex-symbol stuff” that was surrounding him at the time (no, nobody believed him) although he then went and dated first an internationally famous pop star, Kylie Minogue, and then an internationally famous supermodel, Helena Christensen. “We treat [the cliché of a rock star hooking up with a model] with amusement, sure, ” he told me, with a thin smile, in 1993, “but a lot of the time its gallows laughter. Helena is Danish and their sensibility is quite Australian, so youre not allowed to wallow in your own success. Its not like it is in America, where youre allowed to rise above yourself. Its difficult for her because theres only five million in her country and shes the only big star theyve got. But we still walk the streets together. The strangest reaction is from famous people; theyre the ultimate star fuckers. Its endearing in a way as it makes them human. Fame is indiscriminate. Some people are famous because they have been unsuccessful, some because they were abused as children, some because they have money. But once youre in the club it doesnt matter why or how you got there. A nod and a winks all you need. ” One journalist once told Hutchence hed have a much easier time with the British press if he was more of an arsehole. However, Hutchence had been extremely open in the press about his sybaritic ways – the drinking, the indiscriminate sex (which Hutchence always called his “dick” period) and the drugs. Towards the end of the Eighties he threw himself into the British acid house scene with a passion and fervour not usually associated with rock stars worth close to 10m (“When I first got into ecstasy I had a guy on the road with me with a big jar of it. It was almost the break-up of the band, ” he said. “Ive got into trouble with that in the past, ” Hutchence said to me, untroubled by the mention of his narcotic indiscretions, “but fuck it. Ive done lots of things that I have owned up to. Why should I bullshit about it? Ive recently tried to take things a bit more seriously than I used to. Ive come across as a bit of a… its my sense of humour, I guess. But I have never been totally misrepresented in the press. Ive never hit a journalist, although I have hit a photographer, but, hey, mate, everyone does that, sport. Really, though, Im surprised that anyone bothers to ask anyone under 30 anything. By the time youre old enough to answer some questions, nobody really wants to know the answers. However, if youre a young rock star…” With that, he opened another beer and wandered off to the bathroom. INXS were never taken as seriously as they would have liked to have been, but if Hutchence was a bitter man, he managed to keep it well hidden during the weekend I spent with him. He seemed content to be the leader of Australias foremost rock group, the biggest Antipodean band in the world. And if INXS were only a first-division rock band, then, if only in his own eyes, surely Hutchence was a Premier League rock star. “I really am a fucking great rock star, ” he once said. He didnt appear to be an overtly greedy person, though he was already inordinately wealthy. He had invested well – property, recording studios, the usual things – and had put tax-efficient money into the Australian film industry. (In a move that was like the plot of The Producers, Hutchence and the rest of the band invested in Crocodile Dundee – as an attempted tax write-off. “We soon had 20 times the tax problem, ” he said. He also tried his hand at the Renaissance Man business – forming an appalling offshoot group called Max Q and appearing in two low-budget movies, Dogs In Space, directed by long-term friend and video director Richard Lowenstein in 1986, and Frankenstein Unbound, a typical Roger Corman B-movie from 1990. When the world and his wife (particularly the wife) are watching your every move, it becomes dangerous to experiment too much in public, but Hutchence said that he wanted to direct, produce and star in his own movie before too long. But he didnt say this the way I imagine Sting or Peter Gabriel would have said it at the time; he said it in italics: Yeah, sure, mate. Wanna direct movies, know what I mean! At the time I thought to myself that you could take Michael Hutchence out of Australia, but you could never take Oz out of Michael Hutchence. I had assumed that his knockabout demeanour was real, but in hindsight it seems as though it was something of an act. I wasnt aware of it at the time, but Hutchence, it seems, was under a considerable amount of strain. Hutchence (centre) was INXS frontman but said he had ‘never been the leader, March 1988 Paul Natkin After all, I was spending a weekend with a man who had experienced considerable brain damage. Hutchence, though, was in full promotional mode. The band were about to release a new album, Full Moon, Dirty Hearts, and instead of meeting me for an hour of pleasantries in a London or Sydney hotel room, they had decided to invite me down to the South Of France for three days, to get the kind of access that rock stars just didnt give any more. I cant remember the negotiations all that well, as they had mostly been organised by the magazine I was working for at the time, but as far as I was concerned there had been no talk of subject matter, “lines”, nor any talk of copy approval (which wouldnt have been given) quote approval (ditto) or indeed any stipulations at all. Uncharacteristically, I actually didnt have that much interest in Hutchence as a celebrity, or indeed INXS as a group, and this was one of the more perfunctory jobs I did at the time. Consequently, I was probably less concerned with how Hutchence might respond to my questions. So my dispassionate line of questioning actually seemed to bring him out of himself, or at least a certain part of him. The calamitous side-effects of his accident had been kept from everyone except Christensen, and considering how severe they had been and taking into account his bizarre behaviour during the recording of the recent album, maybe the band, or the record company, or his management, might have been rather more concerned about his drinking and his current devil-may-care attitude, although all they saw – and all I saw – was a rock star giving a robust account of himself. Thinking back to 1993 and the weekend I spent with them, Hutchence and Christensen were obviously going through their own private hell “Its weird going back to Australia now, because in a lot of ways nothing really changes, ” he said. “There is the same bullshit, the same people in the same bars saying the same things. You know, I really gotta get to New York, mate. No one understands me here. Musically, things have changed for the worse, because during the Eighties the combination of house music and yuppies killed off live music. The yuppies would sit in the same places we used to play and instead of watching a live band theyd sip their cocktails watching videos. And the parochial sensibility is still really strong, a sensibility that doesnt work in New York, London or Los Angeles. Recently, there was this event called The Wizards Of Oz, which was a night of Australian bands in a club in LA and then New York, I think. But thats a mentality that will never make it for Australian music – you know, lets have a couple of Aboriginals and roos on stage. We could have stayed in Sydney pubs with people shooting bullets at our feet saying, ‘Dance, boy, dance. Whaddya gonna do next? We saw you last week. But we decided to get out. ” He glugged his beer and then started talking about U2 again. “I think we came across as international, much more so than someone like U2, although theyve done their darndest to be the biggest band in the world. We dont play that kind of anthemic music anyway, we play a hybrid and I think weve done a lot to break down certain barriers. Were not AC/DC [pronounced Acker/Dacker. ” Later that night we all went out for dinner at a nearby restaurant, eight of us, including Hutchence and Christensen, having darted through the hills in Hutchences Mercedes jeep and Christensens little Peugeot. We ate seafood, a lot of it, although I dont recall Hutchence eating much, which, in the light of what we now know, makes complete sense. After a selection of desserts were strewn around the large, circular table, someone said something that confused Christensen. When she finally grasped the full meaning of the remark she said, “Thats no cow on the ice, ” a Danish expression meaning “Its no big deal. ” Everyone laughed and we went back to drinking the rather good sauvignon blanc and pinot noir and discussing the forthcoming INXS tour. For Hutchence, the live experience had become the way in which he felt he fully expressed himself and when I started to hear about the tortuous recording sessions for the Full Moon, Dirty Hearts project, I could see why. Michael Hutchence with Paula Yates and their daughter, Tiger Lily, in Sydney, 1996 Robert Rosen/Shutterstock Before the current climate, when performers have become so reliant on the income from touring, most rock groups spent a year recording a new album, before taking it out on the road for a year or so. If they were particularly successful, they might extend the tour a little and if the tour turned out to be monstrously oversubscribed, they might stay on the road for a couple of years or so. But as INXS were finishing their previous studio album, Welcome To Wherever You Are, they decided not to take it on tour, but rather record another album immediately. They still needed to promote it, though, and spent a few months doing interviews in various countries across Europe. While promoting the album in Denmark, Hutchence went to visit Christensen one night in her home city of Copenhagen. Later that night, having been to a nightclub, Hutchence got into something of a scuffle with a taxi driver, when he drunkenly refused to get out of the way so the driver could pass. The taxi driver got out of his car, punched Hutchence and saw him topple over onto the pavement. Christensen remembers blood leaking from Hutchences mouth and ear as he lay unconscious in the street. When the singer woke up in hospital the next day, he was angry and combative and initially refused to be treated. When he relented, he was found to have a fractured skull. On closer inspection, and after two weeks of tests, the doctors found he had lost his sense of smell and taste. Not just that, but as he prepared for the recording of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts, his behaviour started to become erratic, he started to suffer from insomnia and he would display wild mood swings. During the sessions he would smash furniture, have repeated tantrums, threaten to stab the bassist, Beers, and ruin an acoustic guitar by shoving his microphone through it, screaming, “We need more aggression on this track! ” Beers would later say, “When Michael hit his head, he came back a different person and Im sure doctors were prescribing all sorts of weird and wonderful concoctions. ” Now, the full, awful story of Hutchences illness has been made public. A new documentary film, Mystify: Michael Hutchence, is a comprehensive look at the life of the doomed INXS icon and it examines the story of the Australian rock god and the events leading up to his untimely death in November 1997. Nominated for Best Documentary at this years Tribeca Film Festival, Mystify (named after the bands 1989 hit) is written and directed by Richard Lowenstein, who also directed the majority of both INXS and Michaels music videos. As a close friend, Lowenstein was given unprecedented access, resulting in rare archive footage and intimate insights from friends, lovers, family, colleagues and Hutchence himself. As well as featuring testimonies from some of Hutchences closest friends and family, the film also features previously unseen footage, much of which was shot at his Provençal villa. The film also includes interviews with Bono, Kylie Minogue and Christensen, who describes how he grew “dark and very angry” as a result of his injuries. Obviously, documentary biopics about tortured geniuses are a longform staple these days and while Mystify doesnt tamper with the traditional formula stylistically (as is now the new norm, there are no talking heads and in this case not even a narrator) it tells a fascinating and heartbreaking story, one that will be shocking to many of Hutchences less fervent fans. They will know that his own downward spiral was compounded by the declining fortunes of the band, highlighted by Noel Gallagher at the 1996 Brit Awards. The Oasis guitarist and songwriter, having accepted an award from Hutchence, cruelly said, “Has-beens shouldnt present awards to gonnabes. ” Bono was a close pal right up until the end and the pair of them would tear around the South Of France in the summer. Hutchence would arrive, unannounced, at the U2 singers Eze hideaway: “Hed climb over the gates at midnight and just say, ‘Anything going on? ” After a night of carousing, he would “strip naked and be in the pool… and then serve you breakfast”. Bono loved Hutchence so much he wrote a song about him, “Stuck In A Moment You Cant Get Out Of”, for their 2000 album, All That You Cant Leave Behind. Quizzed on his friends demise, Bono says, “When he ran out of that frothy, fun-loving side of life, when he lost that joy, thats when we lost him. ” Hutchence in low-budget film Dogs In Space, directed by his friend Richard Lowenstein, 1986 Central Park/Entertainment Media/Kobal/Shutterstock As the film shows, Hutchence would soon move on from Christensen, getting disastrously involved with Bob Geldofs wife, Paula Yates. If anything, she had an even bigger personality than he did and when they met was in the middle of a profound personality crisis. Perhaps predictably, they both descended into a codependent drug spiral, with Hutchence leading the charge. The singer proceeded to collapse in full view of the world media while personally starting to crave danger. He had always had an insatiable curiosity and this now manifested itself in the way he increasingly experimented with sex and narcotics. “Whereas before he would glide into a room as if on celestial castors, ” wrote GQ s Adrian Deevoy, “he now hobbled bow-legged like a cowboy who had been abruptly estranged from his horse. ” And Hutchence couldnt handle it, hanging himself in a Sydney hotel room in November 1997, with his own belt, at the age of 37. An analysis report of Hutchences blood indicated the presence of alcohol, cocaine, Prozac and prescription drugs, although what wasnt known at the time is the fact that his brain damage was degenerative. The coroners report, which Lowenstein says he acquired by “nefarious means”, reported two plum-sized lesions on his frontal lobe. Hutchence was in a place he found unnavigable. Having been turned into a tabloid caricature, his professional life was being diminished while his personal life was increasingly in turmoil. Locked in a bitter custody dispute with Bob Geldof for his daughter with Paula Yates, Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily, his only solace was intoxication, a daily experimental cocktail of drink and drugs. Lowenstein says Hutchences ability to navigate cognitive and emotional dilemmas was severely impaired, making him increasingly unstable. He had always hated to be alone – hence his need to always be the life and soul of the party – and having not slept for two days and being strung out on booze and pills, emotionally wrought, lonely and mentally weak, he took his own life. Even though he had fathered a child with Yates, he seemed incapable of keeping his family together, while his drug addiction had played havoc with his ability to control most other aspects of his life. His career was on the skids and he was starting to lose his looks. But given his medical problems and the impossibility of his condition, it is no surprise he was unable to cope. When he died, the tabloids made much of the possibility that Hutchences death was the result of auto-erotic asphyxiation, but now it looks as though his suicide was as unavoidable as his rapid ascent to fame. ‘When he ran out of that frothy, fun-loving side of life, when he lost that joy, thats when we lost him Bono Lowenstein became suspicious that something was very wrong with Hutchence when they spent a few weeks working together on a series of music videos a month or so after the Copenhagen assault. To him it was obvious that something was different in the man he had seen and worked with a few months earlier. Lowenstein was one of the only people Hutchence confided in. “He burst into tears as he described his inability to smell and taste the things he loved most in life, including the joys of eating and drinking fine food and wine and his physical disconnection with his current partner, whom he loved. He went into great detail about the complete lack of smell he was suffering and about how he only had about ten per cent of his former sense of taste. “I found engaging in a coherent conversation with him to be very difficult at this time, as conversations would veer off in sudden tangents and become quite obsessive, repetitive and unfocused. This was very different to the man I knew only a few months earlier. ” The fact there was a traumatic brain injury (TBI) involved, as well as the anosmia, came to light during some of the personal interviews Lowenstein undertook with a few of Hutchences closest friends, band members and romantic partners in the process of making the documentary. “I also gained access to a confidential copy of Michaels full and unedited autopsy report, dated 24 November 1997, and the results of the inquest and coroners report, which was then sent to a series of contemporary neurologists and psychologists, ” he says. “My attention was drawn by these specialists to an overlooked section of the report that detailed two walnut-sized areas of brain damage from five years earlier. It was their conclusion that this TBI, combined with emotional distress, a documented lack of sleep for the previous 48 hours and a high level of alcohol in his blood, made him an extremely high risk for suicide at that time. ” The director doesnt think his friend was necessarily doomed, though. “Given his condition, he needed consistent therapy, a responsible degree of understanding of his condition from those closest to him and perhaps some strictly supervised medication. ” Thinking back now to the summer of 1993 and the weekend I spent with Hutchence and Christensen, what strikes me is their fortitude. They were obviously going through their own kind of private hell, intent on keeping his brain damage as secret as possible, while trying to present the best possible version of themselves to the outside world – and indeed to all those around them, including the other members of INXS. There they were, frolicking on the grass, as the sprinklers lent an air of sophistication on the lawns, suggesting a veneer of calm and tranquillity, as their minds whirred with the prospect of what was to come. At the time it was only a fear, but in the end it became a legacy. MOVIES 11:02 AM PDT 6/20/2019 by Tribeca Film Festival An intimate snapshot of the late INXS frontman. Michael Hutchence is recollected by his friends and family in this documentary by Richard Lowenstein, the director of several INXS music videos. Documentary biopics about tortured geniuses are a dime a dozen, and while Richard Lowenstein's tribute to late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence doesn't exactly reconfigure the form, it should prove essential viewing for the subject's fans: a tender portrait of the man's highs and lows that sheds new light on the broken years that directly preceded his suicide at 37. Mystify: Michael Hutchence made its hometown debut at the Sydney Film Festival last week after earlier premiering at Tribeca. Lowenstein directed several clips for INXS as well as casting Hutchence in his 1986 feature Dogs in Space, and his proximity to the singer's sphere has helped him to enlist former girlfriends (Kylie Minogue, Helena Christensen) and friends (Bono) in telling his story. Some of them have even provided camcorder footage and photographs from their personal collections. Their recollections play underneath tour footage and snippets from the band's media appearances at the height of their fame, soundtracked by some of the group's biggest hits and an elegiac score by Dirty Three's Warren Ellis. Hutchence himself emerges as a sweetly shy character, with killer looks and a certain ethereal quality that made him irresistible, in a manner not dissimilar to Ayrton Senna. Asif Kapadia's 2010 portrait of the F1 legend is arguably ground zero for the current boom of biodocs that eschew talking heads for archival collage, though Lowenstein smoothly integrates interviews with figures — managers and record producers, Hutchence family members and personal assistants — who never appear onscreen. The band's formation and early days touring Australia are dealt with swiftly, underlining the sheer number of gigs that honed Hutchence's voice and electric stage presence before INXS broke out with international singles like "What You Need. Need You Tonight" and "Never Tear Us Apart. The latter was inspired by the singer's breakup with girlfriend Michelle Bennett, who talks movingly about the toll that touring exacted upon their relationship. Minogue, too, speaks affectionately of her former beau, and the pleasures — food, sex, travel — that defined their time together. The director and his co-editors Tayler Martin and Lynn-Maree Milburn double back, after tracking the star's ascent, to his childhood, where a lifelong sense of guilt was instilled in the boy when his mother split and took Michael along — but left his little brother behind. The good qualities Hutchence inherited from his parents are nevertheless convincingly sketched; a certain star power from his model turned makeup artist mother, and from his father an ability to put people — women in particular — at ease. Hutchence is heard summarizing Patrick Suskind's novel Perfume for Minogue's benefit, and the late singer's fixation on the book attains a kind of ironic fatalism when he's punched by a taxi driver, years later, while out cycling with Christensen — and loses his sense of smell. Christensen recalls the anger the incident engendered in her hitherto gentle boyfriend, and his insistence it be kept secret. This is reinforced when his bandmates recall how much their frontman changed after the "bike accident" how much they knew about the incident is left dangling. The downward spiral that follows is compounded by the declining fortunes of the band, crystallized by Noel Gallagher publicly labeling the singer a "has-been" onstage at an awards gala while Hutchence looks on, as well as the London tabloid frenzy surrounding his relationship with Paula Yates, the wife of Bob Geldof. His eventual death in a hotel room is attributed to the pain caused by his separation from Yates and their daughter once the singer embarks on the Australian tour that would become a final homecoming. Lowenstein includes tracks by Hutchence contemporary Nick Cave and Nils Frahm (along with Ellis, Cave and Frahm composed the score for the director's last film, 2015's Ecco Homo) in addition to INXS hits. But even more than the music, what shines through is the lead singer's magic as a live performer. The film takes its title from the band's 1987 single, and it captures the strange alchemy that occurred when Hutchence went onstage — transforming from an uncertain young man into a rock god with a lightning gaze who embodied come-hither confidence. Synopsis [ edit] Mystify covers the life of INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence which features private home video and archive footage. Production [ edit] Development [ edit] Plans for a biographical drama film about Michael Hutchence were being developed with a script written by Australian film-maker Richard Lowenstein. [17] Music [ edit] Composer Warren Ellis was in charge of the film's music and score. Release [ edit] The world premiere of Mystify: Michael Hutchence took place in Manhattan at the Tribeca Film Festival on 25 April 2019, including a live Q&A session with the films director after the screening. [36] Broadcast [ edit] In Australia, the documentary was aired by ABC Television during 24 November 2019. [37] Channel BBC Two aired the film in the UK on 28 December. [38] Home media [ edit] It was released on DVD, digital and Blu-ray disc in Australia by Madman Entertainment on 25 November 2019. The extra features include an interview with director Richard Lowenstein and producer Chris Thomas, deleted scenes and theatrical trailer. The site's critical consensus reads, Engrossing for casual listeners as well as hardcore fans, Mystify: Michael Hutchence sheds a poignant light on a life and career cut short by tragedy. 66] Metacritic assigned the film a weighted average score of 73 out of 100, based on 8 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews. 67] Variety film critic Katherine Turman described it as "While Mystify in many ways amplifies the tragedy of Hutchence's death, it also goes a long way toward explaining and humanizing it. 68] In a positive review for Vogue, Laird Borrelli-Persson wrote " Mystify is proof that Hutchence was, and is, much loved. 79] Accolades [ edit] ASSG Best Sound for a Documentary: Robert Mackenzie - Re-Recording Mixer & Sound Designer, Simon Rosenberg - Dialogue Editor, Mick Boraso - Sound Designer, Lynn-Maree Milburn - Additional Sound Designer.
